How to Make Affirmations Work for You

How to Make Affirmations Work for You

If you've ever repeated an affirmation and felt... nothing, you're not doing it wrong.

You're just missing the piece nobody seems to talk about which is: affirmations aren't magic words, they're a practice. And like any practice, what makes it work isn't the tool itself, it's what you do with it, consistently, over time.

Here's what we've learned from five years of helping people build routines that actually stick.

The Common Mistake: More Tools = More Results

It's tempting to think the answer is buying more. Another deck, another journal, another candle, another "one thing" that will finally make this all click. But healing tools don't work by accumulation. A card deck sitting untouched on a shelf does nothing. A journal you write in once a month barely scratches the surface of what you're feeling.

The truth is simpler and less exciting: you don't need a perfect practice, you need a consistent one. You don't have to meditate for an hour or fill ten journal pages a day. You just have to start somewhere, and keep doing something until you start to see the effects.

Three Ways to Make It Stick

Morning Mindset: Pull a card before you check your phone in the morning. That's it. Thirty seconds to set an intention before the day sets one for you. This works because it's small enough to never skip, and the moments that never get skipped are the ones that actually build a habit.

Visible Healing: Keep your journal somewhere you'll actually see it, your nightstand, your desk, next to your coffee maker. Accessibility creates consistency. A journal buried in a drawer is a journal you'll forget exists. A journal sitting on your desk or nightstand is a journal you'll eventually pick up, even on the days you don't feel like it.

Anchor Your Peace: Scent works differently than sight or sound. It goes straight to the part of your brain that handles memory and emotion, before your conscious mind even catches up. That's why lighting incense during a pause, morning coffee, an evening bath, a work break, does something even on the days it doesn't feel like anything's happening.

Your body is learning the cue. Over time, that scent alone starts to signal "this is a moment to relax," even before you consciously ask it to. You don't need to create new time in your day, you just need to attach a small routine to time that already exists, and let your senses do some of the work, so your mind doesn't have to.

Grow Into What You Need

Here's the reality about building a practice: it's not about starting with everything, it's about starting with the one thing that meets you where you are right now. Maybe that's a card a day. Maybe it's a few minutes in our Rewrite Journal before bed. Maybe it's incense grounding you during one pause you already take.

As your practice deepens, it's natural to want more, a journal once the cards feel familiar, incense once you've built a routine worth anchoring. That's not accumulating for the sake of it, that's growing into tools that actually support where you are. The goal isn't to own every piece of the collection on day one. It's to add what you need, when you're ready to use it, so every tool in your routine is one you're actually reaching for.

Where to Start

If you're just beginning, the Claim, Speak, Receive Card Deck is the lowest-lift entry point, pull one card, say it, move on with your day. If you're someone who processes through writing, the Rewrite Journal gives you a place to actually sit with what comes up. And if you want a sensory anchor to pair with either, the Essence Collection incense is designed for exactly that.

Whatever you choose, the tool isn't the hard part. Showing up for it, even in small, imperfect ways, is.
